Serendipity is the word that best describes Maya Bjørnsten’s path into the world of jewellery design. Nothing in her past as film coordinator in the advertising industry or her mothering of two kids in a Copenhagen suburb pointed in that direction. It happened out of the blue. Curious of course, she lived years abroad. She traveled, lived in communes when she was a child, left home early. She knew her strengths and interests. But jewellery?
One day her husband returned from a trip to Antwerp, Belgium with a couple of hundred photographs of traders, stones and people polishing diamonds. She looked at the photos and fell in love. Not with the polished cut diamonds and their embedded glamour. Her love was and is for the raw diamonds aka rough diamonds. Diamonds just the way Mother Nature made them. That which remains unchanged, like love itself. In a world where everything else is subject to impermanence and change rough diamonds symbolize an enduring quality. Maya Bjørnsten found a pencil and a piece of paper and began working on jewelry designs that would accommodate rough diamonds. Most of them are here on this website. Simplicity reigns supreme. To end with the beginning. Serendipity.
